The recording project was conceived by Marcelo and Doug to be a musical register where the two genres of contemporary music – Jazz, and Brazilian Music – could share the same space. Thus, the pieces that were written exclusively for this project have well distinct features of the national genres of the composers.
Doug Stone, for instance, wrote tunes the embrace Bebop, Swing, Free Jazz, Modal Jazz, and Soul. On the other hand, Marcelo Magalhães Pinto, wrote tunes that go through a variety of Brazilians styles, such as the Congado, Choro, Baião, Samba, among others. There is also a composition by the bass player Quinn Sternberg.
in Shifting Perspectives, improvisation acts as a tool for maximum expression in performance: it is through it that the musicians not only express themselves, but also talk to each other.

From the musical perspective, the outcome is extremely interesting because even though the composers had written pieces with the genres that are particular to their own countries (Brazil and United States), there are common elements that unified the compositions: the harmonic treatment and the improvisation.
The harmony, as a sound architect, weaves the connections among the chords, making that the musical elements that goes back since Romanticism to connect the past with the present. Whereas the improvisation, acts as a tool of maximal expression in the performance. It is through improvisation that musicians not only express themselves, but also talk among each other.
A high performance show, which has improvisation as its maximum musical expression, where the past and the present and the American and Brazilian cultures are connected through harmony.
Two cats were invited: the drummer André “Limão” Queiroz, a professor at the UFMG School of Music – who was Marcelo’s colleague during their bachelor’s degree at the same school – and bassist Quinn Sternberg.who has been collaborating with Doug in the US. The album was recorded in Baton Rouge, LA, where presentations were made that promoted not only this work, but also Brazilian and American culture and music.
Marcelo MagalhÃes Pinto
Doctor in Jazz Piano from the prestigious Eastman School of Music (USA) where he had to study very hard in order to achieve the level required by the institution. At the same time that he studied American music, he made great publicity about Brazilian culture, especially our music. When defending the dissertation The musical thought of Egberto Gismonti in 7 Anéis for piano, he had the opportunity to show the American academic community a little of the history of Brazilian music, with a focus on Choro and the patriotic composer Egberto Gismonti. The effort was not in vain. At the end of the course, he was the first student at the institution to win the Marian McPartland Award in recognition of outstanding academic work and service to the university.
His international experience also includes studies and works carried out in France, such as the concert with the UNESCO Symphony Orchestra (performance in Paris at the end of the year of Brazil in France) and at the Conservatoire National de Région in Nice.
His academic work also includes a master's degree and publications in important specialized journals such as Per Musi (Brazil) and Ars Inter Culturas (Poland).
Doug Stone
Doug Stone’s career has involved work as a touring musician, primarily with jazz trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson and his band, the Big Bop Nouveau, as well as with the “world-jazz” group Panoramic, and with a number of ensembles from Chicago, Illinois. As a member of groups at Northern Illinois University, Stone had the opportunity to perform with a great variety of artists.
Mr. Stone can be heard on recordings from the Sam Craine Quartet, the Dave Hoffman Sextet, the NIU Jazz Ensemble and Jazztet, the Jazz Arranging Syndicate, Birch Creek Academy Big Band, the Ed Breazeale Group, the Ji Young Lee Quartet, the Stuart Mindeman Group, the Ian Torres Big Band, the John Burnett Orchestra, Panoramic, Quintopus, the Rick Holland Little Big Band, the Rich Thompson Quartet and Trio, the Westview Project, the John Nyerges Quintet, the Bob DiBaudo ensemble, the Eric Schmitz Sextet, and the Tom Marko ensemble. Stone has four recordings to his credit as a co-bandleader: Doug Stone/Josiah Williams “The Early Riser”, Stone/Ziemba Duo “In the Zone”, Nick Fryer/Doug Stone “Quartet”, and The Stone/Bratt Big Band “SBBB”.
Stone is also a published arranger and composer (Kendor Music).
Since 2009 Mr. Stone has taught private lessons, ensembles, and classes at the Eastman Community Music School (ECMS). He has also served as chair of the ECMS jazz department and has directed the prestigious Eastman Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2012 Mr. Stone accepted a position as the director of jazz ensembles at the Rochester School of the Arts (SOTA) in Rochester, New York. He taught several ensembles, classes, and lessons at SOTA.
In the summers Mr. Stone teaches at the Eastman Summer Jazz Studies Program, the Tri-Tone Jazz Camp, has previously served as co-director of the Eastman at Keuka College Jazz Camp, and served as assistant to the director at the Birch Creek Jazz Camp.
Mr. Stone is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Louisiana State University.
André "Limão" Queiroz
Took his undergratuate Percussion degree from the School of Music of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) where he studied Percussion (Contemporary and Popular) with Professor Fernando Rocha and deepened his knowledge in percussion, techniques and studies on arrangement, harmony and orchestration. Later, at the age of 36, in 2006 he completed a Masters in Performance at the same School and in 2021 took a doctorate degree also in the performance practices from UFMG. André also participated in relevant clinics, classes and workshops on music, drums and percussion, taught by renowned musicians throughout Brazil and the world.
His professional career began in 1985, when he started performing in bars of Belo Horizonte. Since then, André has been acting in studios and stages, in Brazil and abroad with great representatives of music.
In his academic activities, he has been giving drum, music classes and workshops since the 90's having been at the "Pró-músic" school where he taught for three years and, later, he set up his own school. André also taught in 2003 at UFMG in the popular drums extension course and in June 2006 it competed and won the position of professor of drums and popular percussion at UFMG.
It is noteworthy that in 2007 he was one of the winners of the BDMG instrumental award with two own compositions and an arrangement. In partnership with musician Robertinho Brant (titled UZ22) he recorded and produced a Instrumental CD, entitled "Renascimento", distributed all over the world. On this CD he gives his take on the songs by Milton Nascimento. In 2011 he released his first CD author entitled André "Limão" Queiroz and in 2012 he received the prize "Marco Antônio Araújo" promoted by BDMG "Best CD of 2011". Since then he has been making concerts with his group promoting this work inspired by “Universal Music”. In 2015 he returned to composing and recorded his first live DVD and CD commemorating thirty years of career carried out by VÊS Projetos Culturais. In 2017 he released his live DVD and CD commemorating his thirty-year career where, together with his group, he plays his new compositions. Continuing to this day, he continues to act in several musical projects, in addition to the academic and cultural areas, in the studios and on stage with its band playing original tunes and alongside artists and groups.
Quinn Sternberg
Bassist Quinn Sternberg has been a highly in demand musician, composer and educator in New Orleans since moving from his native Bloomington, Indiana in 2016. He plays both electric and acoustic bass in a wide variety of ensembles and styles. Quinn’s musical approach relies upon providing functional and supportive bass lines, while still generating intense live energy and creative interaction. This individualistic style has made him a much sought after voice in the New Orleans scene. As a composer Quinn draws upon his Midwest musical upbringing, influences from his time in New Orleans, and from contemporary musical techniques. The result is a genre-defying sound that is simultaneously melodic, groovy, and cutting edge.
In addition to freelancing and leading his own quartet, Quinn performs regularly with originala great variety of artists. As a leader he has three self-released records out, 2016’s “Weird World” and 2019’s “Mind Beach,” and 2022’s “Cicada Songs.”
Quinn graduated from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in 2016 with a degree in Jazz Studies.
